4 Famous Bathrooms of The World

February 7th, 2011

Believe it or not, there are a number of famous bathrooms in the world. Whether they are famous for their design or for what happened there, people flock to these four WCs to feel close to a piece of history. From the tragic to the wild, these bathrooms all tell a story, so check them out here, and pick one to visit!

1. CBGB Club Bathroom

Though this famous punk rock club closed in 2006, its bathroom lives on in our hearts. The one room bathroom featured nothing other than a toilet and a sink, but the walls were papered with beautiful, colorful collages featuring starlets, pulp fiction novels and insects. The collages were enhanced by graffiti dating back to the 1970s, and thousands of the famous artists who played CBGB doubtless stopped in. Since you can no longer visit the actual bathroom in the club, you can visit a recreation of it at Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum by artist Justin Lowe. This installation is up through September 5th and will span four galleries with its collages, no word on whether or not the original smell will be replicated, though!

2. Graceland Second Floor Bathroom

It is a well-known fact that Elvis died in his bathroom at Graceland, his Memphis mansion. After a long struggle with drugs, his body gave out on August 16, 1977 while he was in his private bathroom attached to the master bedroom of his home. After his death his home became a museum dedicated to Elvis and his amazing contributions to the future of rock music, though the second floor rooms of Graceland were locked up to maintain the hallowed ground of Elvis’ final moments. To this day, only Priscilla Presley, Elvis’ ex-wife, Lisa Marie Presley, his only daughter, and the curator of Graceland are allowed upstairs to see the bathroom,so you won’t ever see this famous commode. The only person who has broken this rule was Nicholas Cage, who married Lisa Marie to gain access. He supposedly sat on the “throne”, laid on the ground in the bathroom where Elvis passed away and laid in the King’s bed.

3. John Michael Kohler Arts Center

Here are a series of functional public washrooms that make a visit to Kohler, Wisconsin completely worthwhile. At the Kohler Art Center, an art museum and community center founded by the Kohler family, each bathroom is an individual commissioned piece of art by a different artist. The six bathrooms are the result of the Kohler Arts/Industry program’s efforts to help artists marry their work with industrial materials made by Kohler. These bathrooms were built in 1999 as the first commissioned work from the program. Artists Cynthia Consentino, Matt Nolen, Casey O’Connor, Ann Agee, Carter Kustera and Merrill Mason each created a washroom, featuring hand-painted tiles, custom molded sinks and fixtures and one-of-a-kind sculpture. One bathroom, the Preschool Washroom, entitled Childhood Vitreous, features stuffed animals injected with clay. Once full, the animals are fired, leaving only the hardened clay behind. Another bathroom, the East Wing women’s washroom, is entitled Emptying and Filling. It is decorated with feminine artifacts like lipsticks, hand mirrors and hair combs made entirely from cast iron. People come from all over to see the art in the Kohler Arts Center, both hanging on the walls and in the water closets!

4. Biltmore Mansion’s 43 Bathrooms

Ok, so there isn’t just one bathroom that you should see in this Asheville, North Carolina mansion, there are 43! This home is known for its sheer size and magnificence. It was built in 1895 after six full years of construction. It has 250 rooms, 34 of which are bedrooms. It has a massive stone spiral staircase with 102 steps and a dining room table that could seat 64 guests. The Biltmore is an impressive museum now, filled with both the original furnishings and art that Mr. Vanderbilt collected during his world travels. Come see what it would be like to shower in a different bathroom every day for a month!

On average, we spend about one and a half years of our lives in the bathroom, so it makes sense that history has been made in such a humble place. While you may not be able to see all of these places for yourself, their significance should definitely inspire you to have a beautiful washroom, who knows, maybe your bathroom will be famous one day!
