The Evolution of the Karaoke Disc – Formats and Types Over the Years

December 28th, 2011

There are some interesting facts about karaoke music. First of all the music on the that you are singing to is not that which was produced or performed by the original artists. You may have a favorite song that you like to sing at various karaoke parties or bars. You have noticed that sometimes the music doesn’t seem to sound the same. That’s because different artists record it under different names. So different labeled karaoke discs sound different even though it’s the same song

So what else makes a karaoke disc different? First of all the formal name for it is CDG or sometimes you will hear it called CD+G. You can probably guess what the CD means but you might be a little stumped on the G. It simply means compact disc plus graphics. Graphics add to the excitement of the whole karaoke scene. Now the main difference between a regular Cd and the CD+G disc is mostly to do with the graphic data. The graphics also include the lyrics. Unless you know the song you are singing off by heart, then the lyrics are there to allow you to sing the song. It takes a special machine such as the karaoke machine to display the graphics on the TV screen. If it were just the audio being used, then it could be played on any regular cd player.

So that’s the basics of the regular karaoke cd. Of course it wouldn’t stop there. Innovative technology had to come out with what is called a super SCDG. Here there is the possibility to put hundreds of songs on one single disc. This means a big saving to you because they are able to provide the music at a lower price that what the original CDG discs are. Some manufacturers are putting entire disc sets on a single SCDG.

Of course the idea of being able to buy more is very inviting. It makes it a lot easier to have less changing of the karaoke discs at a show. There is one big factor though, you possibly may need a special machine to play them though. Then another good thing is they take up less storage space both at home and when traveling because you won’t have as many to carry.

Making karaoke discs is a fairly new technology and you will find changes both big and small being made all the time. It can get very expensive if you try and buy every new item that hit’s the market. If you are happy happy with the setup and system you have now. Then its probably a good idea to stick with it for awhile. I mean if you just purchased a 100 karaoke discs . You don’t want to discard those and run out and purchase the new super ones cause they are the latest on the market.

Professional Selection of Karaoke Song Choices During Events and Contests – Music For All Ages

December 28th, 2011

If you are considering running your own Karaoke business then you must consider yourself a professional. Perhaps you have got all your equipment, now its just a matter of getting your karaoke music.

Your first inclination will be to run out and buy all your favorites. I mean they are your favorites so everyone must love them as well right? Well not really. You are going to have to broaden your thinking when it comes to choosing your karaoke music. You can take some of the guess work out of this if you have some type of business marketing plan.

You need to determine what is your target market is going to be. In other words who is going to use your services. What type of functions do you want to cater to. If you are in this to make money ,then you are probably thinking that you will cater to whoever wants you. That’s fine, just be prepared in your choice of karaoke music so you don’t end up bombing out at an event. Remember you may be hired for a karaoke party at a seniors club, and not do so well. Then there you find out someone was there that was thinking of having a karaoke night, for their bowling banquet. You will probably not be their choice because of the way this event is going. However, on the other hand if you had had the right choice of music, it would have gone much smoother. Word of mouth is going to be your best advertisement, in more ways than one.

You may not have a budget that is going to let you go out and fully stock up on every category of karaoke music there is, in the beginning. So start listing what are the most likely events that will use your services first. Only you will know this for sure but here are some possibilities.

-Karaoke bars
-Karaoke Parties
-Birthday parties
-Wedding showers
-Family get togethers
-Club events
-Weddings
-Seniors clubs
-Children’s birthday parties

No doubt you will add to the list. Also there are several on the list that you most likely will do only on a rare occasion. So start organizing the list, from more probably down to least likely.
Now figure out what your music budget is going to be. Take ½ of that and use it for the first two on your list. Now take the next two and 1/3 of whats left of your budget on that. With the money that is left over spend it equally on the rest.

Now you really need to review the list and take each one of them and make a list of what type of music would be most applicable to that group. For example for the karaoke bars you are going to want a basic mix between rock, rock and roll, country and western and a few love songs.

For family get togethers you are going to need a real mix. Most of the ones we have already mentioned will work well, but you will need to include some selections for the little ones, the preteens, the teens and of course the seniors.

Music Festival Enthusiasts Defined As Festivillians

December 27th, 2011

Let’s define the word Festivillian. It has been used as a descriptive word by festival musicians, artists, promoters, organizers, and enthusiasts for many years. It refers to people that truly have a passion for going to or are participating in art, music, and renaissance festivals in particular. Often throughout history words have been used in a societal or urban fashion over a period of time before they become mainstream and defined as a dictionary term. Such is the case with Festivillian.

The first mention of a music festival comes from the Pythian Games in ancient Greece starting around 582 BC. At that time in history the administration of the Games was handed over to the Delphic Amphiktyonia, a council of the twelve Greek tribes, in order to end the Holy War in the past. The games often included musical performances. This might be the earliest historical mention of a Music Festival.

Initially the words Feast and Festival were interchangeable and utilized to honor Gods. Through the ages each term has found it’s own meaning in our society, however both denote a celebration.

Music Festivals tend to be annual, although many are organized as a one time event. There are those that are for profit and purely entertainment, and those that are designed to do more than entertain. There has been a recent surge over the last several decades in the correlation between certain Music Festivals and environmental awareness. Many festivals today have a Green theme on some level. Some of them, for example the Shakori Hills Music Festival, build a sustainable village, and offer classes and workshops for sustainable living. The Green Apple Festival of 2008, held on Earth Day, was the first of it’s kind coordinating many major U.S. cities in offering Music Festivals and Green living fairs in unison across the nation and even saw international participation.

Another interesting Music Festival is the educative and supportive type. Some communities offer free, or nearly free, Music Festivals for the purpose of offering young musicians an audience and the opportunity to play music with and learn from their more experienced and established peers. One outstanding example of this is the Alaska Folk Festival held in Juneau. Spring of 2008 was their 34th annual festival!

There is something special that we feel in a festival environment. It feels like there is a touch of magic in the air. There is a spirit of friendship, freedom, peace, and comradery that is present among most Festivillians, setting them apart and creating the atmosphere of a summer camp. Even casual festival goers or patrons seem to pick up on it. Eye contact with “strangers” is easier, people smile at one another and strike conversations instantly. Something about a festival seems to bring down our barriers and raise the spirit of community. Perhaps a Festivillian is best defined as a person that thrives on this type of environment.

Art As We Know It Today

December 27th, 2011

Art is an umbrella term that covers many different creative disciplines. No longer is the idea of art restricted to the canvas and oil paints of masters long past, but it is an integral part of our everyday lives. Art is a large part of graphic design, it is utilized in animation, for web design, in films for movie sets and even in photography and audio engineering.

Creative design logos that we see on everyday products are taken for granted by most consumers, yet it is thanks to artistic individuals that we are able to associate name brands with these products. Branding is big business in today’s global market and a well recognised logo can make all the difference in the success or failure of a product.

Animation is moving art and takes great skill to accomplish. Artists spend thousands of hours creating not only the characters used in today’s animated films, but they are also responsible for every detail visible in the individual frame. For every hour of animated movie, thousands of hours have been spent creating the visual feast that draws crowds to the cinemas.

Web design is a booming global industry as it is a method for businesses to effortlessly advertise their service or product. Talented web designers use all the artistic knowledge at their disposal in combination with vast technical expertise to create the perfect web page to deliver your message.

The creative industry is closely interwoven with the film industry and the work of talented creative people can be seen in every aspect of the creation process.

The work is also evident in the advertising industry in all media, from magazines to television advertisements. Another fantastic medium for showcasing the diversity of art is photography. Thanks to advancement in photographic technology, wonderful and interesting effects can be created with lighting effects and digital manipulation. Photography has become an art form in its own right, yet it can still be used to depict creative images with a unique flair.

Using color effects and tints and a range of innovative programs used to manipulate digital imagery has made photography a diverse creative medium. It is easily accessible by creative individuals who can range from housewives to business professionals to cover a wide range of media.

Whether your intent is to capture the memories of your child’s birthday party or to create a powerful advertising campaign, photography is a wonderful medium for this purpose. The amateur photographer can easily hone their skills by attending photographic training classes that will teach a variety of interesting techniques for improving your skill with a camera.

No matter where you turn, you will find yourself exposed to the beauty that is art. Whether this is in the form of a beautiful painting, a cleverly put together television advertisement or an image in a glossy magazine, art is here to stay.

Let the Show Begin! Preparing For a Karaoke Party

December 26th, 2011

With karaoke becoming one of the hottest new trends in entertainment, it brings with it some new terminology. For example if you are the Host, then you can dub yourself as a KJ, meaning karaoke jockey. If you are new to the business, and have just been given your first contract it doesn’t matter how confident you are, there will still be some jitters. Its different when you and a bunch of friends got together for a night of fun and some laughs. Now this is serious business there is money involved here.

Technically this is your business and should be carried out in a business fashion. First before you even leave home, make sure all of your karaoke equipment is working properly, and is clean and presentable. Make a check list of everything you are going to require for your evening of entertainment. Have plenty of pencils for writing out requests, and make sure they are sharpened. Don’t leave getting yourself organized till the last minute. If you do surely you will end up forgetting something. That’s not too bad if you’re only going five minutes from home, but if its an hour away it could be disastrous.

Know exactly what the dress code is for the event you are performing at. If it’s a wedding you really don’t want to be showing up in blue jeans. Dress accordingly. Arrive early and set up your equipment, as its much easier to set up with less people around, especially where kids are involved. All kids get excited about karaoke, and if they are all gathered by the time you get there, you will probably be swarmed in a good natured way.

Once you are all set up, if you are not going to be starting for awhile, see if you can rope off your area. People are intrigued with the karaoke setup, and you don’t want your equipment touched. If possible mingle with the people a little bit. This will be good for you because you won’t feel so strange when you start your show. It will also loosen the crowd up a little bit, and they won’t feel so timid at getting up to participate. Also try to get a feel for the type of music that’s going to be of the most interest.

Start at the time you are scheduled to start, otherwise your audience is going to get restless, and some of them may leave, especially if there are other events going on. You will have your own style and your own approach, just stay with that. Make absolutely sure everyone knows how to register to sing. Have your paper and pencils out where they can be seen, and some method for them to return them to you. Its very important to keep them in order as people get upset when they are waiting forever to get up to sing, but their buddy has already been up two or three times. Above all relax after all you are the professional and its your karaoke show.

Professional Karaoke Machines – Buying the Perfect One For Your Needs

December 25th, 2011

First you have probably been to a lot of karaoke bars and parties and noticed the difference in the music. If you are becoming a karaoke fan you have probably inquired into this, and found out it has to do with the different companies that produce the discs. Being as the background music isn’t the original artists, this is where the difference comes in.

Now when it comes time to purchase your karaoke machine you are going to have to decide on the type of discs you are going to play. You are going to be faced with a choice as some handle CDGs or CD+G or just plain karaoke song DVDs. You need to familiarize yourself with the advantages and disadvantage of these, when you are making your decision. Actually some with have built in music while others use Mp3s. Check around with your friends who have karaoke machines and see what type of discs they play. If you find a variety of them to check out, it will help you choose which method you like the most.

Features are another issue that is going to be important to you and a lot will depend on what you are going to be using it form. Sort of keep an open mind here, because you may have intentions for using it for one thing, then down the road start adding other uses to it. For example you may initially be buying so you can practice your own singing on. If that’s the case then there are many features you are not going to need. But then 6 months down the road you might start having karaoke parties, then the other type features you are going to need.

You need to decide whether you want to be able to turn vocals on or off. Some of the music you buy may contain vocal for you to practice with then as you get better you can turn the vocal off. Your karaoke machine must have the option to do that. Of course you are going to want volume control. When it comes to microphones you are going to have to choose between wired or wireless, or even headset microphones. The price range of these vary, so that will be another deciding factor as well. Then there are things like being able to score the singer. Some karaoke machines have that capability built right into there.

Then it will come down to style and whether you are going to leave your machine at home all the time, or do you want to travel around with it. If its going to be a home unit you may want to look at a system that you can integrate with your home stereo systems. Then on the other hand, you may want to set it up in a separate area, so you will want a stand alone system. The draw back with this system is it can be quite bulky and take up a fair amount of room..

Then there are extras that you can add to it later on such as karaoke stands, which there are a variety of as well. If you are going to travel with it ,you will want to protect it as much as possible, so you may want to have some kind of carriers for your speakers. Also don’t forget to protect your discs as much as possible.

Arts and Entertainment – Getting Your Man to Appreciate Theater

December 24th, 2011

If you ask a person what comes to mind when they think about Broadway theatre, they are likely to say is goes hand in hand with images of New York City and its Theater District. New York is certainly the mecca of all things Broadway. However, many major cities and metro regions across the United States have ornate play houses that host the hottest Broadway plays. It used to be that to see quality arts you had to be in New York City, but no more. Opera, ballet, musicals, productions and the works are seen across the country, making it more accessible to fans of Broadway… and their husbands.

Yes, that’s right, their husbands. To be sure, not all husbands or men are fanatically against attending Broadway plays, in fact we all enjoy it equally. It does seem, however, that stubborn men, and especially husbands, protest the most when it comes to accompanying their wives to a musical of any sort. At least, this is the stereotype or stigma that goes along with a ‘macho’ man. So, ladies, how can you convince, bribe, encourage or drag your man to a play and help him actually enjoy himself? Here are a few tips:

  1. Find Some Action: Choose a drama or action infused production or play. Les Miserables is a great play with some war scenes, fighting, explosions and the works. With such intense action, he may not mind the musical aspect and in fact, he may find it adds to the experience. Ask him to think of it as the soundtrack to his favorite war movie.
  2. Surprise Him: Make all the arrangements and include arts, entertainment and food and surprise him for the evening. Plan dinner or even a weekend getaway.
  3. Make A Deal: Offer to do something he enjoys or give him some space to enjoy the things he loves in return for taking you out so that he sees this is a give-and-take deal.
  4. Make It An Event: If he likes going to dinner and dancing, then get dressed up an have dinner, see the Broadway play and go dancing. Combining the evening with things you both enjoy will draw out the fun for both of you.
  5. The More The Merrier: Invite your couple friends to join you. Your man will be more comfortable around a group of guys he knows and your gal friends will be excited to get out too.
  6. Give A Little: The best relationships are those with two-way streets – meaning, if you’re asking him to give the arts a try, make an honest effort to enjoy things he does. Perhaps this means you don a football jersey and watch a game on Sunday, but who knows, you may get in to the spirit of the game and enjoy yourself. Showing him that you are meeting him in the middle will make him want to do the same for you.

These tips are geared towards the arts but can really be applied to anything you want to get your spouse interested in. The best way to encourage someone to enjoy the arts is to do just that – encourage them with positive reinforcement and never negative or nagging words. Encourage and discover with them which plays, productions or musicals they enjoy and what parts they love the most. Was it the music, the storyline, the special affects, set, props and wardrobe – all of these are magnificent when you are experiencing them from the audience of one of America’s fabulous theatres.
